The first practical road safety seminar for couriers was held in Vilnius: the focus was on real situations on city streets

During the warm season, the number of bicycles, electric scooters, unicycles, and other micromobility devices on Vilnius streets and in public spaces increases. They are actively used not only by city residents, but also by couriers delivering orders. Seeking to contribute to strengthening a culture of responsible traffic, the digital platform “Wolt” organized a practical road safety seminar for them.

At the Vilnius Auto Museum located in Naujininkai, on May 5, couriers-partners cooperating with “Wolt” deepened their knowledge of the Road Traffic Rules, safe maneuvering on city streets, and tested their skills in practice on a simulation track specially set up for this event. During the event, presentations were also given by public sector partners – the municipal company “Judu,” representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Lithuanian Police, and the Ambulance Service.

According to “Wolt” Head of Public Policy for the Baltics Mindaugas Liutvinskas, safe behavior on the streets is the responsibility of all road users, including courier-partners, but it is important not only to talk about it, but also to regularly update one’s knowledge. “Wolt” devotes great attention to this topic, which is why the company consistently invests in various measures that help strengthen a culture of safe and responsible traffic in Lithuania.

“The aim of this practical seminar is to provide courier-partners with useful and practical knowledge that could be applied in specific everyday traffic situations. Courier-partners deliver thousands of orders every day in Lithuania’s major cities, and their active participation in traffic has become an integral part of urban mobility. We therefore aim to help Wolt courier-partners better prepare to move safely and responsibly through city streets, especially when using micromobility devices,” said M. Liutvinskas.

According to him, this seminar is one of the initiatives already being carried out by Wolt, aimed at deepening courier-partners’ knowledge of road safety and strengthening safe and responsible movement in cities.

The important role of institutions

During the seminar, the topic of road safety was presented to courier-partners from different perspectives – representatives of Vilnius City Municipality company JUDU, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Vilnius County Police Headquarters and the Emergency Medical Service shared insights and advice at the event.

JUDU mobility expert Kristijonas Gricius, who presented the most important current traffic issues in Vilnius to the couriers, emphasized that micromobility devices have long since become part of everyday traffic in Vilnius, and that safer traffic therefore depends not only on the city’s infrastructure but also on every resident’s responsible attitude toward it.

“The city’s transport infrastructure is constantly improving, but even the best solutions only work when people clearly understand how to use them safely. The better cyclists and scooter riders assess the environment around them, potential risks and the behavior of other road users, the safer and more welcoming the shared urban space becomes for everyone,” emphasized JUDU representative K. Gricius.

Donatas Mankauskas , chief specialist of the 1st Subdivision of the Road Police Division of the Vilnius County Police Headquarters, emphasized during the seminar that micromobility devices are full-fledged participants in traffic, so their riders must remain constantly alert and follow traffic rules. According to him, even seemingly minor carelessness while riding an electric scooter can have very serious consequences.

“Bicycles, electric scooters and unicycles are very convenient and economical means of transport, but their users must not forget that they are participating in shared traffic. When driving a vehicle, whether it has four wheels or two, the most important thing is to follow traffic rules, choose a safe speed and maneuver responsibly, especially when moving on sidewalks where there are many pedestrians,” emphasized Inga Šablinskienė, head of the 1st Subdivision of the Road Police Division.

The event also focused heavily on the consequences of irresponsible driving, the possible risks of injuries, and first aid. Representatives of the emergency medical services pointed out that even incidents involving micromobility devices that may seem minor at first glance can have serious consequences, so it is important to know how to reduce the risk and what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident or witness one.

A practical session was also held, during which courier-partners could improve their bicycle riding skills – this part was led by Paulius Bakutis, Chairman of the Lithuanian Cyclists’ Community. He demonstrated how to control a bicycle safely when sudden braking or maneuvering is required. Afterwards, the couriers tried out their own skills on a simulation track set up specially for this event. This was the first practical seminar of its kind organized at the company’s initiative in Lithuania.
