BE VISIBLE – SAVE A LIFE! The Police remind everyone: a reflector can save your life in the dark
On the road, it is important not only to see, but also to be seen. As autumn days become shorter and rain, fog, and darkness reduce visibility, pedestrians, cyclists, and riders of electric micro-mobility vehicles become much harder to see. Sometimes a driver may need only a few extra moments to spot a person on the road in time and avoid a tragedy. That is why a reflector, reflective elements, and responsible behaviour can make all the difference.
In an effort to prevent accidents and promote responsible road use, on 27-28 October, officers of the Vilnius County Police Headquarters will conduct a targeted road safety prevention campaign, “BE VISIBLE – SAVE A LIFE!”,
Every detail matters in the dark. During the hours of darkness, especially on unlit stretches of road, in rural areas, and in places without sidewalks, road users are significantly more difficult to see. Rain, fog, and wet road surfaces make the situation even more challenging. Therefore, even on familiar routes, it is important to remain alert and ensure that other road users can see you in time.
On 27-28 October, police officers throughout Vilnius County will pay particular attention to unlit road sections, rural roads, villages, areas without sidewalks, as well as poorly lit urban neighbourhoods, settlements, and gardening community areas.
Officers will engage with pedestrians, cyclists, and riders of electric micro-mobility vehicles, reminding them of safe road-use practices, explaining how to wear a reflector correctly, and highlighting other measures that can improve visibility.
A reflector: a small item that can save a life. A reflector may be small, but its importance on the road is enormous. It helps drivers spot pedestrians earlier and react in time. However, it is not enough simply to have a reflector; it must also be worn correctly.
Pedestrians should wear reflectors in a way that makes them clearly visible to other road users.
• Hanging reflectors should be attached to clothing so that they can move freely and are not covered by a handbag, backpack, or other items.
• Reflective armbands or bands should be worn on an arm or leg, preferably on the right-hand side of the body, where they are most visible to drivers of approaching vehicles. They should not be hidden under clothing.
• Cyclists and riders of electric micro-mobility vehicles should wear bright-coloured reflective vests and ensure that both their front and rear lights are functioning properly.
Do not wait until darkness, rain, or fog become dangerous. Put on your reflector before leaving home, and if you are travelling by bicycle or an electric micro-mobility vehicle, make sure in advance that you have proper lighting and are clearly visible to others.
Police officers also remind road users that violations of the requirements of the Road Traffic Rules may result in liability under the Code of Administrative Offences of the Republic of Lithuania.
Be visible to stay safe! A reflector may seem like a small and insignificant item until the day it becomes the most important detail that helps prevent a tragedy. Take care of yourself and remind your family and friends to do the same, because every life on the road matters.
