A Reflector Is Not an Accessory. It Can Help You Be Seen and Get Home Safely
On a dark evening, a driver might simply fail to see you. In such a situation, a reflector can make all the difference.
As autumn evenings grow darker, pedestrians are becoming increasingly difficult for drivers to see on streets and roads. A pedestrian wearing dark clothing without a safety reflector can appear out of the darkness unexpectedly, often giving drivers insufficient time to brake safely.
Today marks Reflector Day, an excellent opportunity to remember this small yet vital safety tool and ensure you and your family are properly equipped.
To ensure a reflector does its job, it is important not only to have one but also to wear it correctly:
• Attach a hanging reflector to the right side of your body, approximately at knee height, so that it swings freely as you walk.
• Wear a reflective band on your right sleeve, just above the wrist, or around your lower leg.
• Do not hide your reflector under clothing or inside a bag. Reflectors attached loosely to a handbag handle can easily become concealed or turned away from oncoming headlights.
• Ensure your reflector complies with official safety standards. A bright band or an attractive-looking accessory does not necessarily reflect vehicle headlights effectively.
Remember: if you are walking along an unlit road, walk facing oncoming traffic so that you can see approaching vehicles. However, even if you are careful, drivers may still have difficulty seeing you if you are not wearing a reflector.
Take a minute today to find your reflector, attach it properly, and make sure your children, parents, and loved ones are equipped too.
Whether you are commuting to work, walking your dog or heading home after an evening stroll, make sure you are visible. Your safety is worth that extra minute.
